   Drunk Driving

¡@
¡@     Nowadays, most of us are better educated. However, there are still drunk drivers who make accidents constantly. What make these tragedies happen everyday? Nobody like their family members hurt or die. In order to alert those people, we need to make strict laws to ban these things to happen again and again. Today, Taiwan¡¦s laws judge drunk drivers as illegal driving which punishes them by fines and license suspension. But we think that they should be sentenced as murder. ¡@
¡@     According to the broken windows theory supported by Professor Tom Pryor, if a window is broken and left not repaired, people walking by will conclude that no one  cares and no one is in charge. Political scientist James Wilson points out the source of crime is just like the broken window. The best way to fight crime is to fight against disorder by means of serious laws to fix misconduct. Accordingly, we know that many would think that drunk driving is not a serious matter if we lack strict laws to stop it.  Likewise, a drunk driver in Taiwan is punished by invalidating their driver¡¦s license only. He thinks his friends will give him a ride after his license is invalidated. The law does not make his life inconvenient. So the violator is not afraid of such a punishment. But when we make strict laws, most drivers will think carefully to drive or not after taking alcohol. They will be afraid to disobey the law because they understand how serious the consequence is. ¡@
¡@    Many countries make strict laws against drunk driving. As a result, the number of drunk driving is decreased. In the U.S., a law is made to prohibit a person under 21 years old to take any beer. In New York, if one breaks the law for the first time, he will have to either pay $500-1000 and license to be suspended for six months or put him in jail for one year. Because of this law, America has low traffic fatality rate caused by drunk driving. In Germany, punishment is decided by how much alcohol concentration in the violator¡¦s body to pass a sentence. The strictest one is to be in jail for seven years or pay a very expensive bill. But in Taiwan, we just have to either pay about $375-1500 bill or suspend license one year. Drunk drivers do not feel at all their loss. Consequently, 1450 people die from drunk driving each year in ten years. By contrast, only 329 people die in drunk-driving accidents in Connecticut last year. The different statistical number suggests how light our law is and how serious the outcome is. ¡@
¡@     Drinking or driving is a important choice that a driver needs to make. A drunk driver should know that drunk driving will cause serious injury or death to him or herself. The worst is the victim could be an innocent pedestrian on the sidewalk. Hence, a person who drives when intoxicated will inevitably cause deadly injury. Therefore, he should know in advance that he is likely to kill or seriously disable someone. With this thought in mind, he can make a right choice to save his and the other¡¦s life. ¡@
