Discuss Advantages and Disadvantages of Marrying Someone from Different Cultures

Not too long ago, we could have all expected to be born, raised, and married in the same little village. Most likely our life partner would have been the boy or girl next door. Naturally, we would have been of the same race, shared the same culture, and spoken the same language. But nowadays, with global migration and modern communications, we are mixing and mingling as never before. They unite people from every race, culture, and language group. More and more people start to contact the ones who came from another nation and gradually by deeper understanding of them. They even fall in love with each other and decide to marry. On account of the increasing mixed marriage, there do seem more problems of marrying someone from different culture to come into existence.

Many people think that if your life partner speaks another language, they will make every effort to learn it. And you will never regret. The language may be less important than the relationship, but it can bring real divisions at family gathering if you cannot handle it well. On the other hand, if you can learn it well and let it become your second language, it will help you on both work and home.  Also, you can understand another nation and its culture which will give you different values and let you learn how to tolerate and appreciate different customs. Even your children are can be brought up in a nice language environment. Since they were little, they faced with different backgrounds but they would get used to the habits from different cultures. The diverse environments also give them the skills to survive cross racial divisions. The diversity can increase your children cross- cultural competency. Your children are able to accept two kinds of education from another culture because they can have the exceptional language abilities, and they are exceptionally gifted. Furthermore, the diversity of cultures may give you the advantage of being able to understand how others’ think who also come from different cultures.

Nevertheless, it may have some disadvantages of marrying someone from different cultures. To give some examples, if you marry a foreigner just because of falling in love with the one and you don’t know definitely her or his background you have to work hard to understand the habits of them. And you have to do your best to communicate with each other or you wouldn’t know what she or he really thinks. In addition, different cultures bring diversity to your environment. If you couldn’t adapt to the environment from another culture or you can’t get used to your partner’s lifestyle, you would have a serious strike to your marriage. Cultural differences become more prominent after marriage. For example, you may assume your life partner knows how to behave in a culturally appropriate manner, but it isn’t always so. If you don’t learn your partner’s language fluently, you may not understand your partner better. When you try to change your mate to fit your expectations and let him or her adapt to your culture, you and your life mate may become painful and have more arguments. Furthermore, your children will face two kinds of cultural strike. It’s hard for them to accept two different education systems if the teaching methods from their parents are not in consistency due to dissonance in cultural arguments.

Regardless to marry someone from the same or different culture, the couples have to find the best way to live together and overcome the diversity of different cultures. Maybe the problems of some couples are not big deal, but still some couples are suffering the problems severely.  Anyway, if you want to have a perfect marriage, you should undergo an experience to put up some one who is very different from you. Finally, you will have a happy marriage.
