Those who do not travel enough have
barely read one page

I like to take a trip. It’s fun. I can see many interesting things in different countries and I can improve myself because I can learn a lot of cultures from different countries. Traveling is one of the good recreational activities from which I can appreciate the beautiful scenery that I cannot see in my city. It promotes my knowledge.  Knowledge can be acquired not only from books but also through traveling when we are exploring new places. When people are watching, exploring and trying new things, their viewpoints are widened as well. Books can not provide those kinds of experience. However, people will see the differences between races when they are traveling to foreign countries.

I still remember on one summer day I made a trip to Sun-Moon Lake with some of my friends. We went there by bus. It took us three hours to get to our destination. It was a sunny day. The scenery there was very beautiful. The lake was so big and clam. We first went boating on the lake. Afterwards, we went on a hike around the lake. On the road running along the lake, we saw trees and flowers and beautiful peacocks roaming freely. Feeling tired after a long walk, we lay down on the grassy lawn side by side watching the blue sky.

We also dropped in at a solemn temple. It was a typical Chinese shrine in which  goods and goddesses were calmly set on the altar. We quietly worshiped them with both hands clasped in front of the chest. After giving prayers, we stepped out of it and took a bus back to the place where we had started our hiking. We felt so hungry that we went to a nice restaurant to get something to eat. Finally we went home by us. It was such an exciting and unforgettable trip.

Most people like to travel. I think travel is very interesting. The world has become a global village. Traveling around the world makes you appreciate differences in various customs. For example, Thai people usually refills the guest’s drink and offer more food. If you don’t know to say sorry, all you can do is eat and eat. Americans usually tear apart a present right away in front of the gift-giver. Don’t feel offended. This is their way to express thankfulness because you will hear, “Thank you. It’s beautiful.” with surprise and happiness. Not knowing local customs could violate taboos and is considered blunt. In Taiwan, people commonly greet each other with the phrase like this: “ Have you eaten yet?” But you should never say this to the British because they are very private. Next time when you visit England, you say, “ Lovely day, isn’t it? ”

People travel for all sorts of reasons – for business, entertainment, recreation, or even to escape from reality. Traveling helps in learning new knowledge as well as opening up one’s mind. If the world were a book, those who do not travel enough have barely read one page. No wonder Chinese like to comment, “Reading ten thousand scrolls does not amount to walking ten thousand miles.” No doubt, before setting off for your journey, you have already been blessed to receive abundant harvest.
