A newcomer is the survival of the fittest

Freshmen may encounter problems such as traffic and adaptability when coming to a new environment the first time. Some students think positively that they will adapt to the new environment from these problems; for others, whenever they think of these problems and living a new life in an unfamiliar place, it drives them crazy. What problems confuse them? Frustrate them? Let¡¦s find out them.

First of all, students who are from the south of the island dislike the weather in the north. It is too hot to do outdoor activities in summer although we¡¦re from the south; it is so cold and wet in winter that we don¡¦t feel like going out for activities. Such temperature in the north is too high for boys to do sports or stroll around the streets. Girls have to do their best to avoid skin being hurt by the extreme heat when they want to go out to do something. In winter time, we have to drink hot tea or coffee and wear more clothes to stay warm. Besides, air quality in the north is not good because the exhausts by cars can cause air pollution. The more cars and motorcycles, the more gases are released. The exhausts not only have bad effect on the quality of air but also are harmful to our health. Students from the south can not adapt to different forms of weather.

Campus is noisy and personal safety is not safe. For example, many people speak so loudly in cafeteria, classrooms, corridors, student halls, even library that we cannot relax or study very well. People should lower their voice volume particularly at night when students are studying or during bedtime. Besides, it is dangerous to go out alone at night. The campus is too dark. Although there are campus lamps, they are not light enough to show security for night walkers. There should be protection measures for students especially for girls. It can protect girls from dangerous assault or attack. For instance, there should be more night patrol in teams organized by male students or staff. Escort bus transports students from building to building in dark.

Lifestyle in north is also different from the south. People in Taipei take public transportation to commute such as city bus, train, and MR¢â¡]Metrol¡^. Traffic in Taipei reaches to two peaks between 7 and 9 o¡¦clock in the morning plus 5 and 7 in the evening. If we want to go out for shopping, appointment, business, or visiting, we have to avoid these rush hours. Otherwise, we cannot arrive at the destination on time because we have wasted too much time on waiting.

Eating can be the largest problem for we newcomers too. Many deep-fried and high calories foods are sold in the student restaurant but less vegetable and fruit can be found in a meal. Eating on a balanced diet is important for our health. But the school does not provide such a menu. Living cost is so expensive in the metropolitan Taipei since it shows superior quality of life that prices are higher than other cities.

Reading English textbooks is a serious academic problem. We are used to reading Chinese textbooks, doing exercises, and taking test questions in Chinese. However, we don¡¦t know much about vocabulary, professional terminology and phrases from English textbooks. Even though we consult to a dictionary, it doesn¡¦t mean we can get across the true meaning. Most of all, it takes time for us to understand the whole article. There are fewer tests but more reports at college level education. The point is students don¡¦t sit in front of their desk if they don¡¦t have tests tomorrow. I wonder how efficiently I can learn from such college curricular.

Communication is also a problem. Getting along with classmates or roommates is not easy. Because we come from different regions in Taiwan, the growing environments are not always similar. Under this circumstance, the problem of communication emerges. For instance, I think it is not very good to judge one¡¦s personality by first impression because we are not familiar with each other in class. A person who is nice or bad is determined most often by how we feel about that person from our heart. The truth is we don¡¦t find time to understand how and why that person thinks in that way. In other words, what we know that person is just his disguised face. Then we are not able to give that person a fair judgment. Besides, we live with our roommates every day. It¡¦s easy for us to quarrel against small things like habit, laundry, cleaning room, and so on. We learn to obey dormitory rules and survive in a group life in the hope that we can live independently in our own community someday.

Well goes a Chinese proverb, ¡§Do as the Romans do.¡¨ When we are in a new place, we should open our mind, meet challenge, and find solutions. We do our best to conquer. Then we are survivals of the fittest!
