What Freshmen Know about the Campus

(In the end of the first class, Prof. Jan, chair of the chemistry department, concludes her teaching of Freshman Chemistry)

Prof. Jan: Ok, is there any problem about this class, our school, or our
  department, etc?

Ann:          Yes!  Professor, can you introduce to us the university environment?
And tell us what we freshmen have to know?

Prof. Jan: OK!!  First, I introduce the library system in the school.  There are
seven libraries. Every library collects books, magazines, and
newspapers.  You can use the computer database, learning resource
center, and the audio and video materials over there.  Whenever
you have questions, you can look up information and data in the
library.  Second, I want to talk about credits and grading system.
Everyone should finish 132 credits when you graduate.  Therefore
you have to pay attention whether you have completed adequate
credits to fulfill graduation requirements.  You also have to take
those electives because they are counted in your credits, too.
  Problems?

Students: No!

Prof. Jan: If you have any problem, you can ask me anytime during my office
hours. I’m very glad to see you.  And welcome to join this big family!
  Now let’s take a break.

(When the class is dismissed, Ann walks into the classroom in a hurry.)

Peggy:     Gee!  I’m late again!  I missed the first class.

Ann:         Are you all right?  You seem not so good.

Peggy:     I’m fine.  I just feel a little bit sad, because I was absent last class.  I
hope there was no attendance check.

Ann:         Hey!  Don’t worry!  As you wish, there was no row call indeed.  And
the teacher, Chair of the Chemistry Department, is nice.  By the way,
          are you the new classmate?

Peggy:    Yes, I am.

Ann:        But I haven’t seen you before, right?  I mean I haven’t seen you in
          the Freshman Orientation.

Peggy:    Oh!  I didn’t attend the Freshman Orientation.  I had leave permission
due to transportation problem. It’s difficult for me to find public
transport from a small town in Tainan to such a big city like Taipei.

Ann:        I see.  My name is Ann, A-N-N, and yours?

Peggy:    I’m Peggy, P-E-G-G-Y.  It’s pretty nice to make a new friend like you!

Ann:        Me too.

Peggy:    Let’s talk about our department chair.  Could you please describe
her? One of the senior students told me she is very popular.

Ann:        Um…let me think…she isn’t tall, slim and has long wavy hair, dyed.
One thing special is that she is physically challenged, but she does not
mind it.  She always smiles.  You can call her first name Jane.

Peggy:   Oh, she sounds like a friendly and optimistic teacher.  I start to expect
                her next class!

Ann:       Great!  I also think we can learn much from her.  It will be a very good
                lesson.

Peggy:   Thank you for telling me these!  It’s so kind of you!

Ann:        Don’t mention it.

(The bell of class rings.  The second class finishes. After school….)

Peggy:    What are you going to do later, Ann?

Ann:         Nothing special.  How about you?

Peggy:    I’m doing nothing, either.  Oh!  It’s so boring.  Is there anything
       interesting we can do?

Ann:        I have a good idea!  In the Freshman Orientation the senior students
lead us to know the environment of our school.  I can show you
          around.

Peggy:    That’s great!

(On the campus…)

Ann:        This is the auditorium, and that is the finance office.  The building over
there is the gym.  You can take exercise there.

Peggy:    That’s wonderful!  We can play basketball and badminton.  I like
                 sport.

Ann:        Really?  It’s so lucky for us.  We have the same interest.

Peggy:    So we can exercise together.  It’s a deal?

Ann:         A deal!

Peggy:    Where is the cafeteria?

Ann:        There it is.  Can you see that brown building between the library and
          the lecture hall?

Peggy:    Yes.

Ann:        The cafeteria is on the first floor of that building

Peggy:    Is women’s dorm above the cafeteria?

Ann:        Yes, you’ve got it.  By the way I’m living there.

Peggy:    Oh, I live with my family.

Ann:         I really envy you.  I do miss my family.  However there are also many
advantages living in the dormitory.  I know an American student.  I’ve
asked her many questions about her school.  Their postsecondary
students can live at home and go to community colleges for two years
or more.  Or they can choose four-year state or private colleges or
universities.  They can get financial aid, like scholarships, grants, or
loans.  With undergraduate degrees, they can attend graduate
school. For us, the system is different.

Peggy:    It sounds very practical!  Listen, it seems to be busting with noise and
          excitement there.  What’s happening?

Ann:        School clubs are recruiting new members.  Do you want to visit there?

Peggy:    Why not?  Let’s go!

At the Booths…

Zoe:         Hi!  I’m Zoe.  I’m a junior.  Are you freshman or sophomore?

Ann:         We both are freshmen…

Zoe:         Excellent!  Do you like amazement?  Join the Magic Club.  It will make
your college life surprising and colorful!

Ann:         It sounds fun.  However, I can’t make up my mind.  What’s your
                 opinion, Peggy?

Peggy:     I’d like more time to think it over.

Belle:        Don’t hesitate, guys.  Just join us at once.

Suddenly, a spicy girl appears. She takes Ann away.

Milly:         Yes, don’t hesitate.  Just join us Spicy Club right now.  This way
                  please!

Ann:          Help!

Peggy:      Oh! Ann is kidnapped.  What can I do?

Belle:        Don’t worry.  She will be all right.  That spicy girl likes doing this, but
actually she is kidding.  She has no intention to hurt anybody.

Peggy: I hope so.

Although Peggy is still anxious about Ann’s safety, the only thing she can do is just praying that the words Zoe said are true.  After Peggy goes home, she gets a phone  call from Ann.  She tells Peggy that she is fine and invites her to watch a baseball game tomorrow. At that time, she will tell Peggy what has happened. At the entrance to the baseball field, Peggy is waiting for Ann.  They are late for the baseball game.  There are so many people there.  Peggy can’t exactly find Ann’s whereabouts. Then Milly appears in front of Peggy, but without Ann.

Peggy:      Where is Ann?

Milly:          She is not coming.  She is with the people from the magic club.  Do
you want to know our campus?  Let me show you around.

Peggy:      Please do.

Milly:          Have you ever heard the FU JEN ice cream?

Peggy:       No!!

Milly:         That is a delicious desert.  It was made by the department of food
and nutrition.  The ice cream shop opens at 12 and closes at 5.  The
ice cream has two flavors-chocolate and vanilla.  You have to taste it.

Peggy:      Oh!  It sounds tempting!

Milly:         I’m thirsty now.  May I buy some drink? Oh!  Look at that foreigner’s         drink.  It’s Qoo.

Ann:          And he drinks the most popular flavor of Qoo.

Milly:         It’s so cute!  I love Qoo very much especially this flavor.

These three girls begin to chat about that drink, and the foreigner, John, discovers this. He misunderstands that they are talking about him not his drink. He talks to himself.

John:         Maybe something wrong with me.

He checks from head to toes, but everything is alright.

John:         Perhaps those young girls adore me, because I’m so handsome.
         HO!HO!HO!  I’m their prince charm.

John is immensely proud. He walks to them and looks as though triumphant.

Milly:          I’m really thirsty.  I want to drink Qoo.

Peggy:      But there is neither shop nor vending machine.

Milly:          Maybe we can ask him where to buy it.

John:         Oh!  They are coming! I’m so nervous.  Should I talk to them?  But
my wife must be angry, if she knows this.

Milly:          Excuse me, could you please…

John:         No! I can’t.  I already have a wife, and she is very shrewish.  I can’t
            betray her.

Milly:          What are you talking about?  I just want to say ”Could you please
tell me where can I buy a drink?”

John:         Oh!  It’s so embarrassing!

Peggy:       A weird person!  Come on.  Let’s go back to watch the game.

All:              Let’s go.
