This translation course is designed to improve the Chinese-English translation ability of students needing to do translation related to the situation in Taiwan.  The texts to be translated are about the social hardships in Taiwan, the new high-speed train, foreign investment in Taiwan, the baseball player Wang Chien-ming, and about publishing in Taiwan.  During the semester, the students will learn various systems of Romanization, how to translate Chinese sentences into an English sentence pattern, how to present terms unique to Chinese and Taiwanese culture in English, and how to use the proper level of English expression (formal, informal, colloquial, and so on).

At the beginning of the semester, the student will be expected to translate 600 words per class.  By the end of the semester, the amount will be increased to 1000 or more words.

Grading:

The final grade will be based on weekly translations (50 %), midterm and final examinations (30%), and on-line interaction (20%).  Examinations will be done in-class.
