Distance Learning Principles

Attend, Learn and Apply.

Be Calm, Active and Respectful (Netiquette).

 In order to achieve successful learning through a distance, the students should:

•(1)    Follow the class schedule to ATTEND class meetings

 (2)  Be CALM in solving technical problems;

-- Obtain or download the necessary software provided by the instructor and complete installation prior to the course instruction (i.e. Internet Explorer, MS media player)

-- Technical problems are inevitable but not unsolvable.  Try to solve the problems yourself first; if you cannot do it, ask your teacher.

 (3)   Be ACTIVE in learning

-- Set up a schedule to log on to course regularly to retrieve and read the learning materials provided by teachers and to interact online;

 -- Be engaged actively in three different types of interaction for distance learning: Learner- Content interaction, Learner-Teacher interaction, and Learner-Learner interaction;

-- Speak up if you have problems in the public discussion area or contact the instructor privately;

-- Take full advantage of computer conference and instructor's face-to-face meetings.

 (4)   Be RESPECTFULto fellow classmates; follow netiquette;

 (5)  APPLY what you learn to your work, your studies elsewhere and, most importantly, to your life.

Dr. Connor's Policy Statement on Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using the words or ideas of another person without acknowledging your source.  Please respect your sources, your audience and yourself and don't fall into this trap (I am a stickler for this).  When I catch a student cheating or committing plagiarism, I think that the students is basically calling me an idiot for being too stupid to notice.  You so don't want to do this!  This includes copying other's homework.

Plagiarism may be intentional or unintentional.  Lack of dishonest intent does not necessarily absolve a student from responsibility for plagiarism.

I've been teaching on-line for the past seven years, but for many of you, this might be a new thing.  That said, I've cut and pasted here something the AIEDL program.  Take a look!

Tips for success:

  1. Give yourself plenty of time for the materials.  From years of experience, I've found that students usually severely underestimate the amount of time needed for homework.  I'm aiming at one to three hours for every hour spent in class.  If you're consistently doing much more, please let me know.
  2. Relax and enjoy the experience.  Improving writing is hard, especially in a foreign language.  But you will learn more when you are relaxed than when you are nervous and stressed!  I don't bite!
  3. Stay on track.  Make sure you have all your work done on time.  It's easy to forget this class since you don't actually have to face me.
  4. If you have any, ANY, ANY QUESTIONS please feel free to ask-e-mail me, chat with me.  Don't be afraid.  But if you are afraid, get in touch with your TA!

  Grading standards:

A/A- Paper offers a clearly stated, interesting thesis which is supported with valid and sound arguments. The paper shows that the writer has thought about the assignment and developed his or her own ideas about it, instead of just offering minimal responses to the different components of the assignment. Interpretations of theories are sophisticated and supported with textual evidence; more than one source is considered. Writing is between good and brilliant: the organization of the paper is clear, prose is good and grammar flawless.

B/B+ Paper offers a clearly stated thesis which is supported with for the most part valid and sound arguments. The paper stays on topic, considering all the relevant aspects of the assignment. Interpretations of theories are plausible and supported with textual evidence; more than one source is considered. Writing, including outline and grammar, is solid.

B- Paper offers a thesis and attempts to support it with arguments. However, the thesis is simplistic and/or the arguments weak or unconnected to the thesis. Interpretations are weak or problematic, textual evidence minimal or weak. Paper only uses one textual source. Writing and organization have problems that affect readability

C/C+ Paper offers a minimal thesis and minimal or no arguments in its support. Interpretations thoroughly misguided and/or unsupported with any evidence. Writing - both at the level or paper organization and grammar - seriously problematic.

D+/C- No thesis, no arguments or no textual evidence. Organization incoherent, writing very awkward and unintelligible.

D No thesis, no arguments, no evidence. Writer has no conception of most rudimentary aspects of writing (paragraphs, outline).

F The paper displays a fundamental lack of understanding of the principles that guide scholarly endeavors. Examples include but aren't limited to gross mistakes in citing source materials as well as significant errors in framing the paper (e.g., writing a short story instead of an essay).
