英文商務書信寫作 (Business Letter writing)

     A writing course focusing on the modes of writing needed for business letters.

     The goal of this course is to provide students with some basic samples of business letters that they can use as
     templates for their letter-writing needs. 

     A secondary goal is to increase proficiency in grammar and produce clear communications.

     By the end of the course,

  • Students will be able to write and type a formal business letter, using the standard block-style format that is accepted by most businesses.
  • Students will be able to define and label parts of a formal business letter.
  • Students will be able to choose different letter types for different situations.
  • Students will have improved in grammar and vocabulary skills in English.

        1)教授不同英文商業信件的書寫﹐提供同學不同書信範例﹐以便模擬學習;
2)改進同學的英語文法正確性﹐以使溝通的文字清晰。

       課程結束時,同學應能
 l     齊頭式(block-style)
格式書寫正式英文書信,
 l          了解商業書信的組成元素,
 l          用不同文體書寫不同狀況信件,
 l          改善文法和增進字彙。

Requirements:  Students will hand in exercises through out the term, starting with some basic grammar review.  Exercises will be graded.  Students will also hand in letters that are read and commented on by the teacher and given a working grade. I am making handing in worth 10%.  If you hand in all your letters on time, you will earn full points.  If you are missing drafts or are late, you will lose points.  Please be on time so I can give everyone the full points!

Students will choose and revise 10 letters for their final portfolio presentation to the teacher for grading. 

Depending on student skills, there will be grammar and vocabulary lessons throughout the semester.

Exercises    20%   (15 exercises in total)
Letter drafts        10%   (15 draft letters)
Portfolio     40%   (10 letters revised)
Participation        10%   (discussion)
Midterm             10%   (short answer and essay)
Final           10%   (short answer and essay)
