英文閱讀(三)︰文化與科技 (English Reading (III) : Culture & Technology)

This course aims to help students improve their critical reading and thinking skills. Students will read challenging texts that reflect important cultural themes and demand critical thinking, analyze the rhetoric and structure of arguments, and summarize and critique examples of mature expository and argumentative prose.  In an effort to develop students' skill for working and learning together and to expose them to different points of view, group projects that emphasize collaborative research, topic exploration, group writing and problem solving accompany each reading. Students are encouraged to incorporate resources outside the classroom-to search the Internet, explore pop-culture sources, interview people, and conduct observations-to explore further what they have read.

    This is an opportunity to give students practice in developing essential professional communication skills.
     
    1.             In the first classroom meeting, you will need to form groups of four or five.  Select a responsible 
               leader, and hand in your group member list.  
     
    2.             Each group will take turns in preparing and performing 1-2 formal presentation(s) in 
              the classroom meetings.  Length of group presentations should not exceed about 10 minutes,
              with another 5 minutes available for questions and discussion. 
     
    3.             Presenters' responsibilities:
              
    Aside from the in-class presentation, the responsibilities of the presenters also include:
              
    >     E-mail PowerPoint or Word documents to the instructor the week before the presentation.
              > 
             Send outline/summary of presentation to the course mailing list 3 days before the class.
                      When files are unavailable, bring copies to class.
