How to improve your English communication skills with pop culture knowledge found in songs and movies? Take this course.

Reading, watching things, and constantly practicing are great ways to help you speak English like a native. You might be asking what to read, what to watch and how to practice. In fact, there are a lot of materials out there—webcomics, blogs, news, and inspiring talks, just to name a few—that can be customized into language learning lessons. In this class, we use songs and movies.

 

Songs and movies are good sources to help you stay up-to-date on popular culture which is often mentioned or brought up in everyday conversations in English speaking countries. When you’re familiar with the reference, you will be surprised how much more you understand. 

 

Learning Activities include

1. weekly discussions that improve your speaking skills

2. reading quizzes to check your comprehension

3. midterm and final exams to review your learning

4. a group presentation that showcase your research ability, communication as well as presentation skills, and critical thinking. 

 

Within 18 weeks, we will learn together to 

1. be up-to-date on popular culture reference.

2. improve listening and speaking skills.

3. enhance the ability to read songs and movies as cultural texts.

4. promote self-directed learning.

 

　　歡迎各位同學選修這門「聽說英美大眾文化-網」課程，請跟著教學團隊有計畫地、充實地利用課內及課外時間提升你的英文能力。

　　提升英文能力的不二法門就是「多讀多用」──持續閱讀英文，多用英文溝通。本課程主要採用「西洋歌曲」與「西洋電影」的教材，每個單元的閱讀材料都配有文句注釋、自我評量及語音講解。透過這些有趣的英文素材，可讓各位興趣昂揚地與英文為伍；而有系統的學習，將更能協助同學突破學習障礙。

 

　　學生於課程結束後，應具備下列能力：

1. 透過閱讀英美西洋歌曲與電影訓練學生閱讀英美大眾文化英文能力 

2. 透過討論學習內容，提升英文聽說能力

3. 透過作業及練習，增進解讀英美大眾文化文本的能力

4. 透過線上學習模式，增進同學英文自學能力

評分標準

 

1. Online Learning: Participation, Discussions and Quizzes: 40 %

2. Final Exam: 15%

3. Self-Learning Project: 10%

• 一般準則︰「無法規律用電腦上網、或沒有自發學習精神者請勿修此課」。

• 學生應定期收電子郵件及登入群英網平台，依規定聽線上解說及完成各項作業。每週必須根據課程進度，學習程序如下：

1) 在課程單元區依當週的課前導引規定，做暖身思考

2) 在課程單元區觀看教師線上講課；

3) 在互動區練習習題（或做小考）

4) 在討論區回應問題或提出問題（除直接發問、回答外，同儕間也要互相回應）

5) 在作業區繳交作業

6) 利用Teams依安排時間進行線上即時同步討論。
