 I. Class introduction

English Teaching Strategies and Curriculum Design is a very practical class for professional English teachers and learners who are interested in TESL as well as the background information and relevant researches about English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

The purpose of this class is to provide students with knowledge of past and present teaching approaches, techniques for teaching the language skills, various options for intergrading the skills and information that is useful for the classroom teacher's everyday performance and professional growth.

The class is offered via internet in a distant learning mode. Students can link to Engsite in FJU whenever they feel free and ready for the lectures. All of the lectures will be conducted in sequential order according to our syllabus. Power point files along with the video screen can also facilitate your learning more effectively. Each unit will be followed by a demo tape of applying teaching strategies in real classrooms by different teachers in seminars and graduate students in Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation Studies in Fu Jen University. On-line essay tests and worksheets will also be used for learners' self-evaluation and peer discussion.

III. Class objectives

A. To provide a comprehensive introduction of theories and researches in teaching English as a second language.

B. Offering knowledge of past and present teaching approaches, techniques and resources for the English teaching professionals in secondary and higher education.

C. To present practical suggestions and update references in media resources that are useful for the classroom teachers' everyday performance and professional growth.

Unit I : Teaching Methodology

A. Language Teaching Approaches: historical background of 9 approaches of second and foreign language teaching in 20 th C.

B. Communicative Language Teaching for the 21 Century: 5 components of Communicative curriculum design which involve learners as active

Participants in language teaching.

C. Syllabus Design: description and evaluation of syllabus types including grammatical, notional-functional, content based, task-based and integrated.

Goals:

1. To acquire an over view of the historical background of teaching approaches

2. Design a syllabus for your own class using the most effective approaches.

A. Aural comprehension instruction: principles and practices

Grammar and Vocabulary

A. Teaching grammar

B. Cognitive approaches to grammar instruction

C. Vocabulary learning and teaching

Goals:

1. To acquire practical skills and strategies in teaching listening and speaking / reading and writing / grammar and vocabulary.

2. Be able to design effective learning activities in your own classroom .

Unit III : Integrated Approaches

A. Content-based and Immersion models for second and foreign language teaching.

B. Literature as content for ESL/EFL.

Goals:

1. To be familiarize with the content based and immersion models or other integrated approaches in English teaching.

2. Be able to design an integrated teaching unit using literature as content.

Learning activity:

Lecture, practical lesson plan conducting, on-line peer evaluation.

Unit IV : Skills for Teachers

A. Planning lessons

B. The use of media in language teaching

C. Computers in language teaching

D. Second language assessment

Goals:

1. Be able to explain or analyze guidelines in the textbook with 5 minutes video tape recorded in your classroom as an example.

2. Present an effective media assisted or computer assisted lesson plan that you could use in your classroom.

Lecture, multimedia demonstration, classroom meeting and discussion seminar, on-line peer evaluation, on-line test
