Dangerous Internet Lover

A few years ago, police arrested a female student in Taipei County for allegedly defrauding males over internet by telling them she was a beautiful model who was looking for a boyfriend. The girl sent pictures of models she downloaded from the Net to her “ boyfriends” and requested they send her money to cover the cost of a notebook computer or travel. Somehow, she managed to collect NT$ 10,000 to NT$60,000 from each man.

The computer technology makes it easy for people with similar interests to find each other and begin an on-line relationship . It also makes it easier for a total stranger to gain the trust of people in this virtual reality. Sometimes, this virtual warm intimate feeling of on-line relationship could be very dangerous.

A very interesting research done by a student in University of Michigan indicated that most people tend to lie about their age, weight, occupation and even their life style. Thackeray, a prosecutor who has been fighting computer crime for more than 20 years, said “ part of the fun of talking to someone in the chat room is that you can be someone else and maintain an interesting on-line relationship.” People are cautious about meeting strangers on the street, but they're far less careful about meeting someone they thought they knew in the chat room. Cyber love or internet love may be warm and sweet, and yet, it could be deceiving .
