Skimming

Skimming also helps us read fast to skip the information which does not have
anything to do with our present work. The purpose of skimming is to help us
find out the main idea of the information we are reading in order to figure
out relationships of the other details to support the paragraph as a unit. In
this way, we are able to understand the author¡¦s ideas particularly when the article
is lengthy and complicated. How do we skim? Read the title because the title
contains the most important idea of the article. After this, read the first and last

paragraph. The first paragraph of paragraph contains introduction and thesis

statement which is the theme of the whole article. At the same time, the last
paragraph is summary of the previous discussion. Sometimes, conclusion offers
suggestions or solutions which are considered important for readers to know.
Most importantly, find out the topic sentence, read it carefully and understand it
because topic sentence contains the main idea of the paragraph. An article is
entitled "Different cultures, different calendars" The title implies that different
calendars are used in additional to the western or solar calendar we are using
worldwide now. We are going to learn several different calendars.
