Skimming |
Skimming
also helps us read fast to skip the information which
does not have |
anything to do
with our present work. The
purpose of skimming is to help us |
find out the main idea of the
information we are reading in order to figure |
out relationships of the other
details to support the paragraph as a unit.
In |
this way, we are
able to understand the author¡¦s ideas particularly when
the article |
is lengthy and complicated. How do we
skim? Read the title because the title |
contains the most important idea of
the article. After this, read the first and last |
paragraph. The first
paragraph of paragraph contains introduction and thesis |
statement which is the theme of the
whole article. At the same time, the last |
paragraph is summary of the previous
discussion. Sometimes, conclusion offers |
suggestions or solutions which are
considered important for readers to know. |
Most importantly, find out the topic
sentence, read it carefully and understand it |
because topic sentence contains the
main idea of the paragraph. An article is |
entitled "Different cultures,
different calendars" The title implies that different |
calendars are used in additional to
the western or solar calendar we are using |
worldwide now. We are going to learn
several different calendars. |
