COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Welcome
to join the Sophomore English course! This course is designed to help
you become a more effective communicator in the sense of gaining
information and expressing yourself with confidence.
This internet-assisted course aims to prepare students working in the
international business field, which requires effective communicative
skills in English. The team-ship oriented and task-based curriculum will
help students be familiar with business-related knowledge and to foster
their autonomous learning in professional communication skills. Being
exposed to a variety of challenging and interesting topics, students
will practice spoken English through a series of communicative and
meaningful projects such as participating in peer discussion, individual
and teamwork presentation, role-plays, mini case studies. The purpose of
all classroom activities is to provide the target language in meaningful
situations and to improve learners’ competence and performance in
business communication skills.
Texts and topics chosen from the business world are broad rather than
specialized, including subjects such as Social & Cultural Awareness,
Organization, Production, Marketing and Advertising, Trade and
Performance. The communication skills covered include Meetings, Decision
making, Negotiations, and Presentation, etc. A guided discovery approach
to business grammar and usage will lead students to a clearer
understanding of the forms and underlying concepts of English. Serving
as a stepping-stone for language proficiency preparation in Business
field, the course will explore the TOEIC® (Test of English for
International Communication), too.
REQUIREMENTS:
You are expected to be an energetic and active member in the class—this
is possible only if you are present. Regular attendance,
class participation, and learning attitude
are very important for your grade and progress in the academic
performance. Please make necessary preparation for weekly assigned
topics, e-discussion, and project presentation; failure to do so will
positively affect your final grade. You are responsible for the presence
on the assigned dates for group reports and exams. If you are absent on
the scheduled dates, you won’t get any grade; that is, no make-up
assignments. If you miss the class for more than
THREE times (excused or non-excused absences),
you might not get the credits. Besides, please make necessary
preparation before you come to the class; failure to do so will
positively affect your final grade. By the ay, for the classroom
etiquette, please listen to and show your respect for the views of your
classmates. Please turn off all electronic machines during the meeting
period; any noises from those will interrupt the class procedure and
this is impolite to your class!
Remember this – PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! The best way to improve
your English speaking ability is to talk, talk, and talk some more!
Don't worry about making mistakes and don't forget that you will never
learn to communicate in English if you keep your mouth closed! I hope
you can try your best to follow the course and find your ways to
communicate effectively!
