Subject + Transitive Verb+ Indirect Object+ to +Direct Object:

Some eighth-grade girls  stole  a pencil case.

                                          Subj.               V.      Comp.

The compliment in this sentence functions as an indirect object which points out what the girls stole. Normally, students must be able to tell a transitive or intransitive verb in order that they can decide a series of words after the main verb to be object or subordinate clause. The sentence below is made in similar pattern:

The pencil case  belonged to  a new classmate.

                                         Subj.                 V.                  Comp.

In this case, ¡§a new classmate¡¨ as the compliment in the sentence indicates who owned the pencil case. Therefore, ¡§a new classmate¡¨ is the indirect object to represent the recipient of the action ¡§belong to¡¨ as ownership of the pencil case. The same pattern is used to describe another feature about the pencil case.

The pencil case  was filled with  makeup.

                                              Subj.                  V.               Comp.

In this case, ¡§makeup¡¨ as a noun is an indirect object to describe what was inside the pencil case. The phrase ¡§was filled with¡¨ implies an action of putting things into a container; therefore, ¡§makeup¡¨ is the object placed after the verbal phrase ¡§was filled with¡¨ to indicate what was put into the pencil case.
