Subject + Linking Verb+ Noun or Adjective

She   was   a tattletale and a liar.

                                Subj. LV            Comp

A linking verb is not really an action ; it is about an action unable to be seen such as one’s being (existing) or feeling. In this case, the verb is followed by a noun or adjective to modify the subject specifically. The girl was a tattletale ( 愛打小報告的人) let us know the type of person this girl was.
On the other hand, a linking verb could be followed by an adjective as a compliment.

She  was    shocked.
